Photoshoot

Location:  Kenfig Hill Nature Reserve

This is a photoshoot I did for a friend for her Art Foundation final project.  I love how the scenery evokes an African landscape.  Fabric print and the abundant accessorising give an ethnic, exotic feel with the earthy tones and geometric tribal patterns.

Rihanna Rockstar 101

These are stills from Rihanna’s Rockstar 101 music video.  She wears a fantastic animal-inspired headpiece, which is highly elaborate and decorative.  Chaining and jewellery creates, and indeed completes, the outfit.

Aitor Throup

I always find illustrations very inspiring; especially those of Aitor Throup.  His garments seem ‘deconstructed’; pulled apart and put together again to create a truly unique piece.

Rohan Chhabra

Student Rowan Chhabra studied at Central St. Martin’s, London.  His final year garment seems to be inspired by Aitor Throup; a hunting jacket transforms into a ram’s head.

Fashion Museum, Bath

Location:  Fashion Museum, Bath

These are a collection of images from the Fashion Museum in Bath.  They range from a ceremonial costume from 1821 to a white cotton dress by Alexander McQueen.

Georgian Circus and Crescent, Bath

Location:  Circus and Crescent, Bath

The Georgian Circus and Crescent in Bath inspired me with its classical details and forms.  They are truly elegant buildings.

Medieval Abbey, Bath

Location:  Medieval Abbey, Bath

The Medieval Abbey in Bath was founded in 1499.  It is full of detailed carvings and stained glass windows, which tell stories from the Bible as most people at that time could not read or write.  This grand powerful building emulates a sense of godliness and was partly created so that people would be in awe of it; I think it certainly fulfils its purpose!

Cala Vedella, Ibiza

Location:  Cala Vedella and Old Town, Ibiza

A collection of images of Cala Vedella; a village in south west Ibiza.  Lush green slopes are framed by the deep blue sea, contrasting with the whitewash and stone walls of the surrounding buildings.

Old Town, Ibiza

Location: Old Town, Ibiza

I was fascinated by how the picturesque streets are mixed with chaotic building forms and a variety of textures.

Es Cana Market, Ibiza

Location:  Es Cana Market, Ibiza

The majority of Es Cana market was African influenced; full of vibrant colours and patterns.  I found the materials for sale on the stalls most inspiring, particularly the earthy colours and ethnic prints.  As well as this, I found the beautifully painted African masks and ornately decorated musical instruments a joy to see.

ZSL London Zoo

Location:  ZSL Zoo, London

Following up my new-found interest in Ethnic/African patterns, colours and goods, I decided to visit London Zoo. The pictures which follow show animal forms, colours and skin patterns which are all excellent sources on which to start designing.

Circle Of Life

Location:  Lyceum Theatre, London

Whilst visiting London I went to see The Lion King show in the Lyceum Theatre. Fantastic animal inspired costumes and headpieces were a great inspiration in discovering how the show interprets animals through costume.

My birthday presents! On the left hand side are Moroccan embossed leather books and on the right hand side is an old Singer sewing machine with African inspired decorative detail on it.

Designer Research

Over the summer I looked at the work of a variety of designers. However, the two that follow are the ones who stood out and inspired me the most. These are John Galliano’s Autumn/Winter 2010-11 collection and Vivienne Westwood’s Red Label Autumn/Winter 2010-11 collection.  Both designers interest me through their layering, colours and accessorising.
